Mahjong Lessons & Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need experience to take a Mahjong lesson?

No experience is needed. Our Mahjong 101 classes are designed specifically for beginners. We teach the rules step-by-step so you’ll leave knowing how to play confidently.

What kind of Mahjong do you teach?

We teach American Mahjong, the version most commonly played in social groups and leagues across the United States. It’s a strategic, fast-paced game that’s perfect for social play.

How long does it take to learn Mahjong?

Most beginners learn the fundamentals in a two-hour Mahjong 101 class. Many students return for Mahjong 102 to build confidence and strategy.

Do men play mahjong?

Of course! While Mahjong has traditionally been popular among women, it’s absolutely for everyone — and we’re seeing more and more men join the game. It’s a fantastic way to connect with your partner, friends, or colleagues and enjoy a fun, social experience together.

What if I am coming alone?

Our socials are a great way to make new friends! When you register you’ll be asked if you want to be at a faster or slower table. You’ll be assigned a table with similar speed players to meet and play with.

Can I book a private Mahjong party or lesson?

Yes! We offer private Mahjong events for birthdays, girls’ nights, corporate team building, fundraisers, and social groups. We provide tiles, racks, mats, and instruction.
You can learn more about our private events and submit a request here.

What if I am a beginner? A mahjong event sounds scary!

Events will have descriptions of experience level required. If you're new to Mahjong and have taken a MAHJ 101 class but still learning we recommend coming to an event that says "instructor lead" or "instructor guided". Many of our events when you register it will ask what speed of play you would like, and you'll be assigned a table of players at similar speed/experience level of Mahjong as you.
